Review: ‘Unbroken’ by Katharine McPhee

Katharine McPhee, the runner-up to the fifth season of American Idol, eschews the blend of R&B ballads and pop songs that filled her first album with a new sound on her second album. Unbroken is rootsy, acoustic pop, not unlike what Mandy Moore has done in recent years. The sound suits her voice in a somewhat surprising way – McPhee sounds more confident here than she did on her debut. Unbroken also succeeds thanks to winning song choices, including first single “Had It All.”
